Antique Coaching Horn By George Parker

Antique Brass Coaching Horn by G. Parker & Sons, London, with Original Leather Case.
A fine quality late Victorian or Edwardian brass coaching horn, dating to circa 1900, by G. Parker & Sons, Saddlers, London, complete with its original fitted brown leather carrying case.
The long coaching horn is made from brass, with a slender tubular body terminating in a flared bell and fitted with a removable mouthpiece. Three reinforcing bars run along the length of the horn for additional strength and rigidity.
The bell is engraved with the maker's name, 'G. Parker & Sons, Saddlers, London. W.C.'
The original brown leather carrying case is shaped to accommodate the full length of the horn and retains its leather fastening straps and buckles. The leather has developed a lovely rich colour and patina through age and use.
Coaching horns were traditionally used by guards on horse-drawn mail and passenger coaches to announce their approach, signal departures and communicate with other road users. Different horn calls conveyed particular messages, making the coaching horn an essential piece of equipment during the golden age of coaching.
Although the arrival of the railways brought about the decline of commercial horse-drawn coaching, the tradition continued through private and sporting coaching, which became increasingly fashionable during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
A handsome and decorative example of an English coaching horn, particularly appealing to collectors of antique carriage equipment, coaching memorabilia and traditional country house antiques.
