Henry William Standing (British, 1894-1931)
Gentleman in Horse-drawn Cart, 1896
Watercolour, signed and dated
A finely observed equestrian watercolour depicting a smartly dressed gentleman driving a spirited grey horse in a lightweight two-wheeled cart. The horse is shown at a lively extended trot, its movement conveyed through the outstretched forelegs, flowing harness and strong horizontal composition. The driver, wearing a top hat and brown coat, sits upright holding the reins and long driving whip, lending the scene a distinctly late-Victorian sporting character.
Standing renders the horse, harness and carriage with characteristic precision, while the muted landscape and restrained background allow the principal subjects to remain the focus. The vivid red wheels of the cart provide a striking contrast to the soft greys, ochres and browns of the horse and surrounding landscape. Signed and dated 1896 lower left, the work is an appealing example of British sporting art.
