Leading the Horses
Watercolour, signed and dated
An accomplished equestrian watercolour by Henry William Standing depicting a string of racehorses being led out from a rural stable yard. Four richly coloured horses move across the composition in procession, the leading horse ridden by a groom while the others follow closely behind, each shown with decorative exercise rugs and carefully observed tack.
Standing captures the horses with characteristic attention to anatomy, movement and individual colouring, while the expansive horizontal format gives the scene a strong sense of rhythm and progression. The farm buildings and open countryside beyond provide an understated sporting setting, allowing the horses to remain the dominant focus.
The combination of chestnut and bay tones, crisp white markings and patterned horse blankets adds considerable visual interest, while the lightly worked background gives the composition an airy, atmospheric quality. Signed and dated lower left, this is an appealing example of late-19th-century British sporting art and would be of particular interest to collectors of equestrian, racing and horse-related subjects.
