Henry William Standing (British, 1894-1931) - Exercising the Horses
Watercolour, signed and dated
Image size: 46 x 63 cm
An attractive and finely observed sporting watercolour by British artist Henry William Standing (1894-1931), depicting a group of horses and riders being exercised in a snow-covered landscape. The horses are shown moving around a circular training track, their colourful rugs and tack providing lively accents against the subdued winter setting.
Standing was particularly known for his equestrian and sporting subjects, and this work displays the assured draughtsmanship and attention to detail associated with his paintings of horses. The composition has considerable narrative charm, with trainers, riders and a small dog enlivening the scene, while distant buildings and bare trees create a convincing sense of depth and atmosphere.
Signed and dated lower left, the watercolour is presented in a handsome period-style gilt and black frame.
A decorative and characterful example of early 20th-century British sporting art, well suited to an equestrian interior, country house setting or collection of traditional sporting pictures.
Signed and dated lower left "H. W. Standing 1931".
Presented in an original-style gilt and black moulded frame.
