A Fine 19th Century Oil Painting of a Horse, 'Billy', Attributed to Abraham Cooper.
A fine and charming mid-19th century oil painting on panel depicting a handsome bay sporting horse named Billy, with a docked tail, standing in an open landscape, attributed to the celebrated British sporting and animal painter Abraham Cooper RA (1787-1868).
The horse is beautifully portrayed in profile, with a rich bay coat, dark mane and tail, and finely observed anatomical detail. Standing alert against a softly painted sky and distant rolling countryside, Billy is captured with considerable character and presence. The restrained landscape provides an elegant backdrop, drawing attention to the horse's strong proportions and refined features.
The reverse bears an intriguing period inscription reading: "J. T. D.'s Horse Billy - by Abraham Cooper - Sept. 1845".

Abraham Cooper was one of the foremost British sporting artists of the 19th century, particularly admired for his paintings of horses, sporting scenes and military subjects. A Royal Academician, his work is distinguished by its sensitive observation of animals and accomplished portrayal of equine form.

The painting is housed in an impressive, richly ornamented gilt frame, decorated with scrolling foliage and floral motifs, which complements the period character of the work. The frame displays age-related wear, including some cracking and small losses to the decorative moulding, adding to its antique appearance.

A delightful and evocative example of early Victorian equestrian portraiture, with the added interest of a named horse, period inscription and attribution to one of Britain's most respected sporting painters.
