Antique Golf Club Walking Stick

Antique Golf Club Walking Stick, Mashie Iron Sunday Club.
An unusual antique gentleman's walking stick, dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period, featuring a plated iron golf club head in the form of a diamond-backed mashie, mounted on a traditional hickory shaft. The distinctive golf club handle is particularly appealing, with its elegant, angled neck, smooth playing face and characteristic diamond-backed profile. The plated head retains an attractive mellow finish, with light surface wear and markings consistent with its age and use. The long, straight hickory shaft displays a warm honey-brown colour and attractive natural grain, while a brass ferrule completes the traditional appearance.
Walking sticks of this type are commonly known as Sunday Clubs or Sabbath Sticks, a charming reminder of golf's early history and the strict observance of Sunday as a day of rest, particularly in Scotland. According to golfing folklore, the restrictions on Sunday play encouraged enterprising golfers and club makers to devise walking sticks with golf club heads as handles. These allowed their owners to carry what appeared to be an ordinary gentleman's cane, while retaining the possibility of enjoying a discreet putt or swing when nobody was watching. Whether this happened quite as often as the stories suggest is open to question, but the tradition has become an enduring part of golfing history.
A handsome and highly collectable piece of early golfing memorabilia, combining the craftsmanship of the traditional iron club maker with the ingenuity and humour associated with the Sunday Club. An excellent addition to a collection of antique golf clubs, sporting walking sticks or unusual gentleman's accessories.
