Antique Leather-Bound Book-Shaped Chess and Backgammon Board.
An attractive antique leather-bound games board cleverly designed to resemble a two-volume set of books. The illusion is enhanced by gilt tooling and gilt-lettered titles to the spines reading 'English Games, Vol. 1 & 2'. Made from softwood covered in leather, the hinged boards open out to reveal two traditional games.
The exterior forms a chess or draughts board with alternating cream and black squares, surrounded by a decorative gilt-tooled border. Opening the board reveals a colourful backgammon playing surface with a tooled tan leather background, red and black points and gilt decorative borders.
The backgammon set is complete with fifteen ebony and fifteen boxwood counters, two dice shakers and four dice. When not in use, the board folds neatly into its book form and can be displayed on a bookshelf alongside other volumes.
Dimensions when open: 46 cm by 52½ cm, 4 cm high.
