Stag Antler Carving Set with Silver Mounts.
A superb late Victorian four-piece stag antler carving set, retailed by Elkington & Co., presented in its original walnut case, beautifully lined with rich purple silk and crushed velvet. The silk interior is gilt-stamped 'By Appointment, Elkington & Co., Manchester', reflecting the quality and prestige of this elegant presentation set.
Each piece is mounted with finely cast sterling silver fittings, fully hallmarked at the Sheffield Assay Office with the lion passant, crown assay mark, and date letters 'X', 'Y' and 'Z', corresponding to 1890, 1891 and 1892. The silver also bears the maker's mark 'C.A. / S.D.', the registered sponsor's mark of Charles James Allen and Sidney Darwin, trading as Allen & Darwin of Portland Works, Arundel Street, Sheffield. Their distinctive C.A. over S.D. mark was registered in August 1887, before being replaced by the better-known A & D mark in September 1892.
The silver end caps are further stamped with Registered Design No. 75139, while the knife blades are etched 'Elkington & Co., Manchester'. The walnut case retains its original plain brass cartouche to the lid, left unengraved.

The set comprises:
Carving knife - 41 cm
Carving knife - 33.5 cm
Carving fork - 31 cm
Carving fork - 29 cm

Beautifully presented in its original fitted case, it is an excellent example of quality Victorian tableware and would make a fine addition to any collection of antique silver, country house antiques, or period dining accessories.
