Set of Eight Vulcan Stainless V-V Hickory Shafted Golf Clubs.
A fine, original and well-matched set of eight Vulcan stainless steel hickory shafted golf clubs, comprising irons numbered 1 to 7 and a No. 8 putter. An attractive and remarkably well-preserved set dating from the late 1920s, suitable for both hickory play and display.
The Vulcan matched stainless irons were advertised in the company's 1928 catalogue at $68 for the set of eight, with an additional 55-degree spade mashie available separately. The catalogue stated that the clubs were "carefully matched and coordinated in length, lie, loft, weight and balance", so that each club would have a similar feel in the hands.
The set appears to be entirely original and is in very good, clean condition, showing relatively little evidence of use. Each clubhead bears the matching stamped number '4230', together with the Vulcan sunburst trademark, 'REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.', 'Stainless', 'V-V' and a small stylised GOLF trademark. The individual clubs are marked 1 Iron, 2 Iron, 3 Iron, 4 Iron, 5 Mashie, 6 Mashie Niblick, 7 Niblick and 8 Putter.
The iron faces have fine parallel line scoring with cross-lined borders and a central stamped GOLF emblem, a distinctive feature of these Vulcan irons. The stainless steel heads retain a pleasing, clean appearance, with light surface marks consistent with their age.
All eight clubs retain their hickory shafts, which appear sound and in good condition, with long black leather grips. The original No. 8 putter has an unusually long hosel, measuring approximately 17 cm, and a narrow, slender blade.
The 'V-V' designation indicates the longer and lighter specification of these clubs compared with those stamped with a single 'V'.
An appealing and unusually complete matched set of late 1920s Vulcan irons, retaining a good degree of uniformity throughout and offering an excellent example of early stainless steel club manufacture.
The measurement shown is the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face for the No.1 iron.
