Antique Golf Book, The Golf Courses of the British Isles by Bernard Darwin, First Edition, 1910.
A wonderful first edition of The Golf Courses of the British Isles, written by Bernard Darwin, widely regarded as one of the finest golf writers of all time, and beautifully illustrated by Harry Rountree. Published in London in 1910 by Duckworth & Co., 3 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, this is a classic work of golfing literature and a lovely addition to any collection of antique golf books.
The book retains its original green cloth hardback binding, with an attractive gilt title and floral decoration to the front cover, complemented by gilt lettering and decorative detailing to the spine.
Darwin's engaging descriptions capture the character, challenges and individual charm of some of Britain's and Ireland's most celebrated golf courses as they were in the early twentieth century. His observations are brought to life by Harry Rountree's delightful illustrations, depicting famous holes and memorable views across many of the courses featured. Together, the writing and artwork offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of golf over a century ago.
Among the well-known courses featured are St. Andrews, Sunningdale, Walton Heath, Blackheath, Wimbledon, Westward Ho!, Rye and Hoylake, alongside many other historic golfing venues.
A particularly appealing antique golf book, combining Bernard Darwin's wonderfully descriptive writing with Harry Rountree's charming artwork. An excellent reference for anyone interested in the history of British golf courses and a desirable addition to a collection of early golfing books and memorabilia.
