Victorian Unmarked Solid Gutta Percha Golf Ball.
A good example of a Victorian solid gutta percha golf ball, commonly known as a 'Gutty', with a moulded square mesh pattern.
The antique golf ball is unnamed, with no maker's markings, and features the distinctive raised square mesh pattern designed to improve the ball's flight and performance. The original off-white surface has developed an attractive aged patina, with characteristic crazing and areas of paint loss, adding to its charm and authenticity.
A lovely example of an early golf ball from the gutta percha era and an interesting piece of golfing history. A desirable addition to any collection of antique golf balls or early golfing memorabilia.

Diameter: Approximately 4.3 cm.

The History of the Gutta Percha Golf Ball
The introduction of the solid gutta percha golf ball around 1848 revolutionised the game of golf. It gradually replaced the expensive, handmade feather-filled leather ball, known as the 'Feathery', making the game considerably more affordable and accessible to a wider audience.
Unlike the labour-intensive Feathery, a Gutty could be manufactured relatively quickly and cheaply. The gutta percha material was heated until soft and pliable, loosely rolled into a ball shape and then placed into a mould. The mould was compressed in a press, imprinting the desired surface pattern onto the ball, whilst excess material was squeezed out along the seams. Once cooled, the seams were trimmed, leaving a durable, solid golf ball ready for play.
Early Gutties were initially smooth, but golfers soon discovered that balls with nicks and marks on their surfaces performed better in flight. This led to the introduction of various moulded patterns, including the distinctive square mesh design seen on this example.
Gutta percha is a natural latex-like material obtained from the sap of tropical trees, principally found in Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia. Its durability, relatively low cost and improved playing characteristics helped transform golf from an expensive pastime into an increasingly popular sport.
The Gutty era lasted from approximately 1848 until the early 1900s, when the newer rubber-cored golf balls gradually took over.
A fascinating and collectable piece of Victorian golfing history.
