A very nice, adjustable Edwardian club fender with an open front, brass tube uprights and moulded brass base. The upholstered red seat is 17 cm wide with the measurements inside the seat being 99 cm extending to 1m 30 cm. The front opening is 49 cm wide extending to 79 cm. Its external width is 1m 33 cm extending to 1m 64 cm.
The idea with the open front of the fender is to retain access to the fire and to allow more heat to escape into the room. With this type of fender you also add an extra dimension to a fireplace by providing more seating.
Club fenders were all the rage in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and were found in Gentleman's Clubs, libraries and billiard rooms of country houses.
