Walter Henry Dingley 'The Nova' Silex-Pattern Salmon Reel.
A fine and authentic W. H. Dingley 'The Nova' Silex-pattern casting reel, measuring 4¼ inches in diameter. This is a particularly well-preserved collector's example, retaining most of its original dark factory finish.
The reel features Dingley's distinctive cut-away rim, factory-milled by Dingley, which provides convenient access for manual thumb braking when playing a strong fish. It has alloy handlebar with matching twin original ivorine handles. The caged spool construction also allows air to circulate around the line, helping it to dry after use.
The rim is fitted with a milled on/off check mechanism, together with a strapped tension adjuster and matching rim brake lever. Internally, the reel retains its original patent brake mechanism. The smooth brass reel foot, approximately 9½ cm in length, shows remnants of its original nickel finish, while the backplate is stamped "The Nova" and the front plate engraved 'H. Moore, Liverpool'.
Inside the reel and true to Dingley's production style, these reels are typically stamped internally with a maker's code, this one is stamped 'D151', identifying it as a Dingley-produced reel. The casting measures approximately 2 inches across the frame, with the handle projecting a further 2.2 cm beyond the stated depth measurement.
The reel is a fine example of the classic Silex-style centre-pin casting reels produced by Walter Henry Dingley, one of Britain's highly regarded reel makers. Dingley had previously worked as a senior reel maker for Hardy Brothers before establishing his own workshop, where he produced high-quality and often bespoke reels for leading tackle outfitters throughout the United Kingdom.

This particular reel combines several features closely associated with Dingley's work: the cut-away rim, twin ivorine handles, ivorine rim-brake lever, strapped tension regulator, brass foot and internal patent brake mechanism. Its excellent original finish, distinctive 'The Nova' stamping and Dingley production mark make it an especially appealing example for the collector of historic British salmon and casting reels.
