Oil on Canvas - Three Foxhounds.
A very atmospheric late 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a trio of handsome tricolour foxhounds gathered outside a stable or kennel door. The hounds are characterfully portrayed, standing alert against the dark interior of the kennel, with excellent attention to their individual expressions, markings and stance.
To the left hangs a distinctive red hunting coat (hunting Pink), together with a riding crop, adding an evocative sporting element to the composition and reinforcing the painting's association with the traditional English foxhunting scene. The subdued, earthy palette and strong contrasts between the shadowed kennel interior and the lighter foreground create a wonderfully atmospheric quality.
The painting is signed and dated (1887) to the lower left and is attributed to the British sporting and animal painter John Wright Barker (1864-1941), also known as Wright Barker, who was celebrated for his depictions of sporting subjects, animals, horses and rural life.
'A Study of Three Fox Hounds Outside a Kennels' is presented in a particularly attractive and substantial period giltwood frame, with moulded and beaded decoration, which complements the character and period of the painting beautifully.
A charming and atmospheric sporting picture, offering an evocative glimpse into the traditional world of the English hunt.
