A fine Edwardian spelter figure depicting the celebrated English sportsman C. B. Fry in the act of bowling. Cast in spelter, a zinc-based white metal alloy using the lost-wax process, the figure captures the cricketer mid-delivery, wearing a traditional cap and mounted on a simple square plinth. Its attractive bronzed finish gives the sculpture a warm, aged appearance.
Charles Burgess Fry (25 April 1872 - 7 September 1956) was one of the most remarkable all-round sportsmen of his generation. Best known for his distinguished cricket career, he represented England at international level and was also an accomplished footballer, playing for England. He competed in rugby to a high standard and, remarkably, held the world long-jump record.
Fry's achievements extended well beyond the sporting field. He later represented India at the League of Nations and became a figure of considerable public fame. Such was his reputation that he was even offered the throne of Albania.
This vintage cricket figure, traditionally identified as C. B. Fry, captures something of the athleticism and elegance for which he was renowned. The poised bowling action, period styling and bronzed spelter finish make it an appealing example of early twentieth-century sporting sculpture.
