Portsmouth And London Royal Mail Stagecoach By Cecil Aldin
A wonderful original chromolithograph by the renowned sporting artist Cecil Aldin, 'The Race' is a classic example of his highly collectable coaching scenes, combining lively action with the humour and character for which he became famous. Published in London by Thomas McLean, Publisher to Her Majesty, 7 Haymarket, on 21 October 1899 (copyright registered), the print depicts the Portsmouth and London Royal Mail stagecoach drawn by four horses as it races through a bustling village scene. Typical of Aldin's work, the composition is filled with amusing details: an elderly lady urges her light two-wheeled carriage forward in an impromptu race against the coach with a gaggle of geese sat beside her, local villagers cheering her progress. Nearby, children run alongside the speeding coach, a chicken hastily darts from its path, and in the foreground a dog enthusiastically pulls a small cart carrying a rather apprehensive young passenger.
Rich in colour, movement and storytelling, The Race perfectly captures Aldin's gift for observing rural life and his ability to bring humour and vitality to everyday scenes.
