Antique Brass and Oak Swivelling Magazine Rack By William Tonks & Sons.
A wonderfully elegant and unusual antique brass and oak swivelling magazine rack by the renowned brass foundry and metalware manufacturer based in Birmingham, England, William Tonks & Sons.
This beautifully proportioned piece, dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period, features a series of graceful, graduated brass arches, arranged at varying heights to accommodate newspapers, magazines and periodicals. The delicate brass framework is mounted on a rectangular solid oak platform with moulded edges, which swivels upon an elegant brass tripod base, allowing easy access from all sides.
The slender, outward-sweeping brass legs terminate in rounded feet and are joined by decorative curved supports, creating a wonderfully light and sculptural appearance. The combination of the warm oak, polished brass and flowing architectural lines gives the piece a particularly attractive Arts and Crafts character.
The underside of the oak platform is impressed twice with the distinctive sunburst trademark and W.T & S initials of William Tonks & Sons. These original maker's marks provide excellent confirmation of the piece's manufacture and attribution.
Established in the late 18th century, William Tonks & Sons became highly regarded for their quality brasswork, producing a wide range of decorative and functional domestic furnishings. Their distinctive sunburst trademark was introduced during the 19th century and is a recognised mark of the firm's craftsmanship.
An exceptionally charming and decorative example of English period brasswork, combining practicality with an elegant and imaginative design. The unusual swivelling construction, graduated arches and beautifully shaped tripod base distinguish it from more conventional magazine racks of the period.
A stylish and highly functional piece that would sit equally well in a traditional or contemporary interior, particularly in a library, study, sitting room or reading corner.
